Cell phones are a very big
part of everyday life being used even by junior school children. However, usage of cell phone is one of
the most controversial topics in schools today. They are great tools for research. Cell phones are cheaper than computers. The camera can be
helpful in any class. Cell phones
are now so powerful that they rival computers.
Gone are the days when
students studied in the library.
Today research is done primarily on the internet and can be done through
any devise that can access the world wide web. Cell phones are small enough
that they can be carried in a pocket and powerful enough to provide information
anywhere and at any time. You can
also save information and store in your phone or in the cloud for later
use. A smart phone gives us access
to a calculator, a compass, stopwatch and the amount of apps that can be downloaded to
the phone are endless.
Smarts phones are also
cheaper than computers. A good
student computer costs between 800€-1200€. When you compare this to an average cell phone of
approximately 150€-300€ you can see that you can save a lot of money. There are many different brand and a
huge variety of phones to choose from.
Sometimes your telephone provider even has a sale.
The camera feature on the
cell phone can be a useful tool in the classroom. Students can photograph information that the teacher has
shared on the board and recall that information in the future. This can be a big help when the bell
rings and the student is running out of the classroom. The quality of the
picture is as good as any other point and shoot camera.
Cell phones will be around
for many more years and it’s time to bring them into the classroom and use them
to their fullest capacity.
